Paramore’s Hayley Williams to Design “Sanctuary of Self-Love” for Bonnaroo

May 2, 2019 by Molly Beauchemin 1 Comment

Paramore lead singer Hayley Williams recently reported via her Instagram that she will be designing a “Sanctuary of Self-Love” for Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival‘s 2019 edition. The annual Manchester, Tennessee music festival will feature headliners Childish Gambino, Cardi B, Kacey Musgraves, Solange, Brandi Carlile, Mac DeMarco, The National, The Lumineers, and Hozier, among many other artists.

As a compliment to the music, Bonnaroo’s Sanctuary of Self-Love will feature spa treatments and panels about Mental Health and self love (among other aspects of self care). Flower crowns, glitter stations, and hair styling from Williams’ cruelty-free hair dye company Good Dye Young will also be available.

Sanctuary of Self-Love

“[I’ve] been working with a wonderful production team for the last 8 months on a plaza that i’m curating for @bonnaroo: Sanctuary of Self-Love,” Williams wrote in her announcement. “It’s been a lot of work and it’s teaching me a lot about the kind of life i truly value. can’t wait to be able to share some of my favorite methods of self-care/connection in such a beautiful place, surrounded by music and art. so much to come – more announcements about the plaza and such. for now: pls enjoy this slide of photos of me standing in a field, skipping past porta potties, etc.”

Music and Mental Health

While the Sanctuary of Self-Love presents an opportunity for Bonnaroo attendees to learn more about alternative therapies in mental wellness, it also demonstrates how very mainstream these same offerings have become– not just at music festivals, but within music culture writ large.

This is also not Hayley Williams’ first brush with discussing mental health in public: last year, in a detailed Instagram post she announced a sabbatical from social media, which was fueled in part by her desire to get appropriate treatment and time to prioritize her own mental health. Fans were quick to applaud the gesture, and have reacted warmly to Williams’ self care journey via Good Dye Young. Her recent announcement about Bonnaroo’s Sanctuary of Self-Love was met with similar warmth.

“I want people to know that, as an introvert, there is a space for you at festivals,” Williams told NYLON. “Going to a show is one of the most healing things that I think a human being can do, because there’s community, there’s a release.”

Since her social media sabbatical, Williams has since sat for an intimate interview with Midnight Woman/ L’Odet. In it, she discussed family, divorce, femininity, and forgiving yourself. Read the full interview here.

More information about the Sanctuary of Self-Love and Good Dye Young’s plans for the festival is forthcoming.

Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival runs from Thursday, June 13th to Sunday, June 16th, 2019.
